IN FOCUS: SWISH!

Mark your calendars and gather your friends; the 2015 Bonners Ferry Swish is set to take place on July 11 in downtown Bonners Ferry.

One of Idaho’s premier 3 on 3 basketball tournaments, the event is a favorite of not only those in our community, but others who travel here especially for the tournament. And it’s not just the participants who look forward to this event each year; it’s the spectators as well.

“We have people from all over who come for the event,” said Anne Tompkins, the sports director for Boundary County Parks and Recreation Department who is sponsoring the event for the third straight year. “People come from Montana, Spokane, Newport and clear down to Lewiston.”

The cost is $60 for a three-player team and $80 for a four-player team. “Our brackets go from 9-years-old to 99,” said Tompkins.

There will not be a shortage of things to do in Bonners Ferry the weekend of the event. Tompkins said they coordinated with the Kootenai River Days’ committee so that both events took place on the same weekend. “There are also a lot of class reunions taking place the same weekend,” said Tompkins.

The goal of the Swish Tournament is to provide a fun time for all ages. The small amount of proceeds made go back into the Parks and Recreation Department’s programs. Last year’s proceeds went to help fund new backstops. And while the proceeds are not significant, the economic boost to the downtown economy is considerable.

Tompkins explains that the tournament purposely does not have food vendors so that attendees can experience some of the great restaurants in the area. “We really want to promote the downtown,” she said.

The event is something that is embraced by the entire community, as is evidenced by the many sponsors who have stepped forward to help make this event a success. Their money helps with advertising while the registration fees cover T-shirts and other prizes. Among the event sponsors are 3 Mile Store & Café, Boundary Abstract, Boundary County Parks & Rec, Boundary County Rotary, Community Title, Far North Outfitters , Idaho Forest Group, JB's Tire and Auto, Kootenai River Inn, Mountain West Bank, Pace-Kerby Insurance, Columbia Bank, Profotofix Printing & Photography, Rusty Moose, Riverside Auto and Under the Sun.

With all the activities going on in Bonners Ferry that same weekend, Tompkins said she is still short some volunteers and shared that anyone interested in helping out should contact her at 208.304.3603. She promises it will be a great time!
