It’s never easy when an elderly loved one begins to have medical issues that involve long-term care needs outside of their homes. Family First is a group of adult family homes that provide a wonderful option for those in need.
Family First, which provides 24/7 care in a private home setting, has been recognized in our local medical community for several years. The owners, Julie and Chris, who have been in business for over fifteen years, have over 25 years of experience in geriatric care. Chris has past experience in geriatric physical therapy.
But, it is the hands-on experience that the owners provide that truly sets Family First apart from other private home-care organizations. Often Chris can be seen making homemade soup in the kitchen of one of their homes, doing grocery shopping to ensure superior nutrition for their clients, or even driving clients to medical appointments.
But, their business is also very close and personal to their own hearts since each of them wanted to ensure that the elderly, who are often in vulnerable positions, were taken care of correctly. When they opened their first home, this allowed them to take care of their own grandmothers and this provided them with the ultimate peace of mind.
But, the most important people within their business model are obviously the clients for whom they care in a quiet, peaceful homelike setting. Each resident is given an individualized care plan to best meet his or her needs.
Each home is wheelchair accessible and the private and semi-private rooms available in each home are always bright and cheery. Transportation to doctor appointments, entertainment and activities are provided daily.
But, the caregivers at Family First also excel in all of the areas that are medically necessary to provide your loved one with an excellent quality of life. Family First is skilled in Memory Care, Dementia, and Alzheimer's Care; Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy through Home Health; Stroke Care, Oxygen Administration, Diabetic Management, Nutritional Management, Medication Administration, and Hospice Care.
But, for Chris and Julie, the most heartening part of owning this type of business is the fact that they are rewarded by the relationships that they develop with each and every resident. Most recently, they cared for a woman who had been married to her husband for over seventy years. Each day, the woman’s husband faithfully came to visit her, even though advanced dementia had robbed her of her ability to speak. When it was time for each of them to go, they gracefully took leave in a way that mirrored the film called The Notebook.
Family First is a wonderful alternative to a nursing home where you can be assured that your loved one will never feel alone, helpless, and isolated. After all, our loved ones have given us so much and it is a gift to be able to give them peace of mind during this time in their lives.
