ECA Presents: HAPA

On Saturday, February 27 at 11:00 am, Edmonds Center for the Arts (ECA) and Edmonds Senior Center will partner to present a special outreach performance by Hawaiian music troupe HAPA. This interactive performance will take place at Edmonds Senior Center, 220 Railroad Ave, and is open to community members of all ages.

HAPA just celebrated its 30th anniversary. Like the islands themselves, HAPA’s music is an amalgam of influences ranging from ancient Polynesian rhythms and genealogical chants, to the strummed ballads of Portuguese fisherman and Mexican cowboys, to the inspired melodies and harmonies of traditional church choirs of the early missionaries. Add a dose of American acoustic folk/rock, and you have what has been described as the “most exciting and beautiful contemporary Hawaiian music the world knows!” (Maui Times).

Guitarist Barry Flanagan has been the guiding force of HAPA since its beginnings in 1983. Joined by Kapono Nā‘ili‘ili, singer, Hawaiian chanter and multi-instrumentalist; Tarvin Makia on bass; and hula dancer Radasha Ho’ohuli, Flanagan will discuss the origins of HAPA’s unique sound, and the band will perform a few of their most beloved songs. A Q&A session with the artists will follow.

RSVP in person at Edmonds Senior Center, or by phone at 425.774.5555. HAPA will also perform at Edmonds Center for the Arts, 410 4th Ave N, on Feb. 27 at 7:30 pm. Tickets $24, $29 & $34. Visit www.ec4arts.org or call the ECA Box Office at 425.275.9595.

HAPA’s outreach performance at Edmonds Senior Center, part of ECA’s annual Education & Outreach programming, is made possible with the generous support of Tulalip Tribes and the Hazel Miller Foundation.
