Kelly Horning is an athlete who loves the thrill of contact sports. The 15-year-old freshman at Coeur d’Alene High School has already lettered in volleyball and basketball and has her eyes set on spring track.
“My favorite part about basketball is definitely the physicality of it! I love fighting for that jump ball!” said Kelly. In volleyball, “My favorite part … is when one of my teammates or I get a really good block or kill and turning into the huddle and celebrating!” Kelly never stops playing sports – she also plays on an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball team called Pump and Run in Spokane and also plays on the Thunder Volleyball Club team.
In spite of her love of sports, one of her biggest challenges came from her height and young age. She overcame it by working hard to earn her spot on the court.
“The biggest challenge on the court is proving that you deserve to play. … I had to earn playing time,” Kelly said.
Although college is a few years away, Kelly knows she’ll play college sports. She’s wanted to ever since she was in the third grade. “Playing a sport in college would be a big deal to me,” she said. The University of Oregon is a possibility to study athletic training or physical therapy.
Until then, she has the strength and support of her teammates and coaches. “It’s nice to be a part of something, a part of a group that has similar interests and goals is truly special.”
