Coeur d'Alene Lake City High School Athlete of the Month: Whitney Meier

Lake City High School senior, Whitney Meier, knows how to set a goal and reach it. The 17-year-old basketball player made it her goal as a freshman to break a school record. And she did just that last year when she broke the school record for the most 3-point shots made in a season (58).

Most recently, at a state tournament game, she tied a school record for the most points scored during a game. She was also within one shot of tying the state record for most 3-point shots in a tournament game.

Without realizing it, Whitney has followed the words of wisdom of a former Lake City basketball player, Jen Kerns.

“‘Once you step on the court, your seconds start ticking. You have to go out there and work as hard as you can and enjoy every second,’” Whitney recalled Kerns saying. Judging from achievements in the sport, she’s well on her way to accomplishing anything she wants.

Whitney has an agreement to play basketball at North Idaho College while she studies for an associates in zoology. Eventually, she wants to attend Central Washington University or the University of Idaho to prepare for a career in caring for zoo primates.

Whitney cherishes the relationships she’s made in basketball. “Being part of a great team means that you work hard at all times, you rise up and be a leader when you need to lead, to be unselfish in play and in friendship, to have each other’s back, and to always focus on your goals. The last four years my basketball team has become my second family and I have created bonds that will never be broken.”
