Coeur d'Alene Events NIC Commencement Ceremony

The North Idaho College 2016 Commencement Ceremony will be held in Christianson Gym at 10 a.m. Friday, May 13. About 350 graduation candidates are expected to walk this year out of about 1,000 eligible for graduation.

This year's speaker at the commencement ceremony will be NIC physics instructor David Thompson. Thompson earned a master's degree in physics from Colorado State University in 1990 and then spent two years teaching physics in the Peace Corps in Ghana West Africa. In 1996, he earned his PhD in chemistry from Purdue University, where his dissertation topic was Chaos Theory.

Thompson served as a staff scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory where he designed computer simulations to understand the spread and prevention of epidemics. He left Los Alamos to work with a Santa Fe consulting firm where he designed a computer simulation, based on ant foraging behavior, to route trucks for an international liquid air company.

In 2003, he became an independent systems analyst, consulting with national laboratories performing computer simulations, with Spokane County to improve operations in their justice system, and with Snap (Spokane Neighborhood Action Partner) to improve several of their programs.

Only guests with a ticket will be admitted to the ceremony. Tickets have already been distributed to graduates and their guests. Guests are encouraged to arrive early for seating and parking. Campus streets will close down at 9:45 a.m. for the processional. Parking permits will not be needed the day of commencement. Those needing special accommodations should call NIC Disability Support Services at (208) 769-5947.

Those who cannot attend can view the commencement ceremony live at 10 a.m. on CDA-TV public access. The ceremony will also be streamed live in the TV lounges in the Edminster Student Union Building adjacent to the gym. In addition, DVDs of the ceremony will be available for $20 each following the ceremony by calling Andy Finney at (208) 769-3266 or andy.finney@nic.edu.

Graduates, friends and families are invited to a reception sponsored by the NIC Alumni Association honoring this year’s graduates immediately following the commencement ceremony in the plaza between the gym and the student union building, which will include a class photo that will be posted to the NIC Flickr account at https://www.flickr.com/photos/northidahocollege/albums.
